The Helvetica Variations #7

I belong to a group called A Letter A Week  [link here] where the challenge is to create 2 alphabets over the course of the year, according to certain criteria. And I confess I have been hiding. I am way behind; this latest variation doesn't quite fit the guidelines, for that matter most of the variation don't, but I have had great fun, lots of challenges, met some very generous people, and, am waiting for the final variation which should be finished at the end of the month. But I was thrilled to pick this up today from Will at Charm City Laser [link here]. I had found Will while doing some research into how I could get these letters cut from a book block. Nobody was too excited about the idea until I met Will, whose only concern was that the whole thing would catch fire. Thanks Will.

Some of the earlier variations are here, here, here, here and here

  1. Oh! I'm not sure which is more fascinating...the actual alphabet or your photos. Both! More please.

  2. I am fascinated with the processes you have been through with this project Liz - you must have learnt so much! well done for finishing - will you be doing it this year? or are you 'going dotty' anyway!! the theme seems very appropriate to us artists in the uk who are going to be inspired by the new exhibition at Tate Modern - Yayoi Kusama (I'm going to see it next month)

  3. Thanks jennifer, I think I should have had a vote on which variation I should have submitted.

Rosie, my Damien Hirst alphabet is in the works. and the scary thing is I'm not sure I'm kidding. Don't know Yayoi Kusama work so off to check it out. Are you joining A Letter A Week and going dotty too? The more the merrier.

Thanks Val, it feels more like done, done done, or more truthfully almost done, almost done, almost done.

  4. I know this has been the most outrageous labour of love for you Liz - but I have loved every iteration and exploration. It has been a delight to watch it from this side of the world - and I love what this is looking like! Did the paper catch fire a bit???

  5. Thanks Fiona, Don't know it it caught fire but there is a lot of soot about and that wonderful smell of burning. Am separating the letters and will post asap, at the rate I'm going about 2020

  7. Thanks so much Noela, the process is quite wonderful, frustrating at times, but hopefully I'll resolve it. Sooner than later would be good!
