Temporary Alphabet or A Time-Based Alphabet

This alphabet continues to elude me. Every time I think I have it, it's somewhere else. Maybe I need to tie string to it. Yesterday I decided I was taking the whole thing way to seriously and decided to play. Take a roll of paper, staple it to the wall, add a container of joint filler, and a paint scrapper and let's see what happens. The letters only lasted a few moments as I kept smoothing over the surface before writing the next letter; and I only forgot one letter, which I faked for the photo below. Next time I will use heavier paper and if I am really smart use a gessoed board so I can really move into the surface; the wet joint filler and my use of the paint scrapper ripped the paper several times. Oh well, just smooth that into the whole.

  2. Hello Liz, thank you for visiting my blog. I have worked with joint compound as well.. I love the textures that can be created-- especially after sanding the surface.. makes a wonderful surface for acrylics.. you were able to get very gestural with your letters.

  3. Play. It's an essential component to work.
Taking myself too seriously seldom, if ever results in any exciting work!

  4. Thanks Don, that's the plan, will steal some of John's leftovers.

Hi Donna, joint compound is lovely isn't it, soft, smells good and kind of like spreading butter or icing sugar. Started to use some powered graphite on it but soon realized I needed to wait 'till it was dry. Will try sanding and acrylics, thanks for the tips.

Thanks Leslie, I totally agree, but sometimes it slips in, un- noticed, and uninvited. Begone seriousness!

  6. Hi Fiona, Play time is soooooo good, and like you I wonder this where it will lead. It's always a busy time right now so even getting into the studio is a challange, let alone any time to play.

  8. Thanks Velma, This whole thing with letters, words ect. is so elusive. They can be torn, covered over, burnt, then people want you to arrange the letters in a certain pattern that someone has decided spells the word...to many rules! Liberate the letters.

  9. Lovely letters. I use these compounds a lot - great when they start to crack and brushing over with boot polish is great. Noela

  10. Thanks Noela, love the shoe polish tip. I had forgotten about that. Hope to get back to the studio next week. While I love this time of year there isn't much studio time.
