A Longer Book of Horizontal Ideas

Another accordion structure, again made from mostly horizontal images. And again not paying any attention to page width, which does add some excitement when it comes to bind it. Some pages act like pop outs, some pages are not the same height  and some pages break the accordion structure. Some of the pages have words and poems from my notebooks. The covers, which have a spine, are glued front and back. Next time I will glue only the pages to the back cover. Love this experimenting. This book ended up being 7.25 x 9.5 in. 24 pages with 4 inserts.

We Are Off

After breakfast, across Canada, following that old dictate, "go West". I think it says young man but I'll just skip over that part. So here is the plan. Get in the car and drive to Calgary, the only place we have a hotel reserved. It's a tad intimidating looking at the map; that's a lot of country.

We want to be in Calgary for the Art of The Book, 2013 show, which given Calgary's recent severe flooding is a miracle that it's even going ahead. Big congrats to the organization who announced Monday that the show was cancelled as the venue had been affected by the flood and yesterday announced they had found a new venue to hold the exhibition. I am thrilled and honored to have Why I Paint [link here] included in this exhibition, and Elegy to Betty [link here] and A Tiny A, B, C [link here] included in the traveling show. Please note the change in venue, it will now be held at DaDe Art & Design Lab, 1327 9 Ave SE, Calgary.

Sketch Book Project

I am almost finished my book for the Sketch Book Project, just need to re-glue the pages to the cover, re-glue the cover and see what else it wants. It's a fun project and I am learning a lot. Actually it's a lot like sewing with all the planing ahead and visualizing how it will go together. The book is 80 pages which I printed in groups of 8, cut and folded and glued the next 8 pages ect.ect., so that I have ended up with a  400 inches long accordion style book. Will post images of the book as soon as it is finished but meanwhile here are some images from the pages.

I love Type

It's true, I love type. I love the shape of the letters, I love the space around them, the only problem with this relationship is I can't spell, but who cares every relationship has its bumps. Over the years I have made "artists books" and have plans for more. "Homage for Betty" (need a new title so any suggestions are welcome) is at the mock-up stage, while "Why I Paint" is still only at the computer stage. With this book I am hoping to learn letterpress so am eagerly scouting out people, studios and workshops to take some courses. Meanwhile I have been playing with type again, this time using the whole alphabet except for Z, there was no more room. The typeface is Americana and all the letters are lowercase.
