Under My Feet

Walking down a street the other day, keeping my eyes glued on where I was placing my feet, worried about slipping and sliding on the ice I found these seed pods. I almost threw the scans of them in the trash as I had forgotten to clean the scanner first and the scans were full of dust. Blowing them up though I found them beautiful, otherworldly, far galaxies; all this from something I stepped on walking down the street. Maybe I should look down more frequently when I walk.

Dandelions...For Elie and Grace

Spent time yesterday lying on my stomach getting these photos. Nothing better that being a kid again, full of wonder of these simple plant who flower is the most vibrant yellow and then magically, overnight, the flowers become puffballs. These are such a fine system for the seed dispersal that it fills one with awe.

Bones

It's time to start cutting back the garden. I try to wait for the first frost because the colours can be glorious, but its a big garden and I don't always have time to wait. Thought we might get a frost Sunday night as it was 2 C [37 F]  and a full moon. Usually I'm pretty good about deadheading but this year I've let some things go . Like the day lilies, and am I ever glad. Here are the seed pods, looking like rib cages. The structure of the pod is a marvel and as they dry, the skin disintegrates so that the seed is released.
