A few weeks ago I received a small work in the mail from a friend
Tamar Zinn [see her work here]. It's a work 6 x 6 in on a paper support 6 x 12 in and is the first half of a domino that I now get to work on. It's been exciting and intimidating; firstly because I admire Tamar's work which I find elegant and subtle, and secondly because 6 x 6 is seriously small and I need to work right up to the edge of her work.

I pulled out a couple of sheets of 300 lb Arches and started to draw some ideas and work out some of the technical problems of how I will do the final drawing next to hers. Bleed was a big problem, so are the size of my hands, but the biggest problem was the truthfulness of my response. I want a relationship between the works but sometimes it felt like I had lost me [often a state I have longed for] and couldn't figure out the transitions between tiles. Below are some of the early ideas.

another one of the early responses to Tamar's work, better but what if I flipped the shape….. |

better but still not there |
This is quite a fine challenge, to domino onto something so subtle and elegant. All three of your responses continue the balance well.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Jane, it's a wonderful challenge, still not sure which response will win.
DeleteOh what a beautiful idea - and such a lovely (and scary) thing to do! I like all of your responses, (the top two the most) they will most definitely be sympathetic and a greater work will emerge than if it were simply done by one. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteThanks Fiona, I have been loving the work that you and Susan have been collaborating on, I know it was one of the reasons to take up this challenge….and I love Tamar's work.
Deletereally love this idea too - the image from your friend Tamar is beautiful and I really like your response to it. I actually like the third work best where you flipped your idea over. Love that negative space it makes. Hope this is just the first of a series of dominos you are making with Tamar??
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Susan, as I said to Fiona I have loved watching the sensitive collaboration between you and Fiona, it's been inspiring to watch, and this one with Tamar is letting me try out a lot of things.
