The Colors of Snow

Ever since I was a child I have been entranced by the colors of snow and ice, and yesterday as I walked very carefully on top of the latest layer there was a hollow thump to every step, the land had become a drum.  Where we had broken through the previous day held a world of wonder, shards of crust-pebbled snow resembled the river at spring breakup. That electric blue was captured on the underside of the shards, clear pale yellow glowed along the surface; another day when it was very good to have to watch where I was placing my feet.

shards of gold
where Zoe had broken through the snow and ice
shards piled up  wherever we walked
the mysterious blue
rivulets running across the lawn
more gold and blue,  and beautiful shapes
One of Zoe hairs caught on the edge of a shard
